Today as Greg prepared the towel to help me back-bend he asked me about Thailand. "When are you going?" as I told him and then he made his usual silence (that is all he wanted to know), I saw myself continue to talk and share some more. "It is expensive you know?" I heard myself say, "for an extra night the charge is 80 euros, and that is with the YTT discount!"
Later on I could not help blame myself. I mean, here I am, a blessed person that can actually pay for YTT in a paradise place like that, with a certified ashtanga teacher and I am complaining... The nerve!
Then again, should I just ignore the facts of money?
In one of my many flight stops I need to spend 10 hours in Mumbai. After sleeping at the Dubai airport one day I KNOW that this is not something I would like to repeat. Besides, I have a feeling that Mumbai is no Dubai when it comes to the airport standards of floor cleaning.
hotels.com is quoting 150 dollars for their cheapest Mumbai hotel in which to spend that night and recover for the rest of the interminable journey. I mean C'mon, this is Mumbai!, not Boston.
I remember landing in Bangalore last January and having people approach me with offers for hotels for 1000 rupees and way less too (about 25 US$). Granted they may not be the most amazing hotels in the world, but then again 150 dollars!, for one night in India?
I am not seeing this as complaining anymore. Instead I am seeing it more as a reality check, and as a serious responsibility that comes with having money too, not that I am Rockefeller but I have been blessed to receive the opportunity of this trip. Responsibility and serious questioning seems to me to be the way to go.
