Hanumanasana, here comes the split

Inspired by fellow UK blogger Grimly I attempted Hanumanasana today after supta padangusthasana.

It is not meant to go there, heck it is not meant to be practiced at all until the third series, together with walking in water, speaking in languages and passing through walls,  but I wanted to so I did, don't tell my teacher.

Things that surprised me:

  1. It came much easier than expected, a revelation really
  2. I saw that the asana is not complete, there is a forward bend after the split, oh well, next time
  3. The videos keep on coming rather blue, I need to check the camara settings
Is the front foot supposed to be pointing? and does the video from vimeo take longer than the youtube ones?

  1. Don't worry about the silly rules! Rules schmules! Anyway, the vinyasa I got from Rolf, for Hanuman w/in the context of 3rd, is:

From down dog, swing right leg forward. Swing hands up & together, overhead. Thumb driste. 5-10 breaths there. Then forwards - same breath count. Then up with hands up again, same count. Then hands in prayer at chest.

He said same count there too but I never do. I do one breath in the prayer hands here.

I also like to bounce now! I watch a lot of rhythmic gymnastics clips, and ballet dancers bounce in stretches too. Especially on the 2nd hold with the hands up, I'm trying to rotate that back hip forward & under while I lift UP & I swing the hands back on the exhale. I am imagining being able to swing back far enough to grab the back leg.

We'll see how much bouncing I get away with in C's room! :)

  2. Thanks B that is GREAT!... and I guess now I see where the bouncing comes from, the last time I tried this I was 11? and a ballet student... a looooong time ago, perhaps that is why I like the bouncing too...

Thanks for the Rolf vinyasa explanation, next time I try it I will do this and see how it goes. You are quite right on the rotation of the back hip, I had doubts about what happened there, this clarifies. Also, I saw the pix of Hanuman that Grimmly has (a cartoon) and it was great to see the flow of energy in it... it really is a jump after all (From south India to Sri Lanka!) :)

  3. I've got terrible rotation in the hip in that pose, which is why I always make a point to try to get in there. All those leg lifts I used to do at the gym, maybe... I've got a SOLID core, but tight hip flexors do not help the back bends!

  4. yes, you are quite right, that is probably what I have too... and I feel it in the backbends.

  5. Ahhh, nice! Envious, this is a real struggle for me, but it's coming. I seem to have reached the point though were I'm pretty much in it and can just work on getting deeper, Boodi's bouncing tip makes a lot of sense. I've been kind of doing that, getting in as deep as I can with my hands on blocks to hold me a little higher and just bouncing softly. Much cooler doing it without the blocks at last.
Isn't that a great picture it's from a book of asana drawings, I think the link is under the previous hanumanasana post.
I forgot to bend forward too, not sure i'd risk it myself yet but you look good to go.

  6. You can do the forward Grim - that's the easier part!

  7. Hi Grimmly, yes I loved the picture, it was as if I could totally see the way in which the energy has to flow...

I cant wait to try it with all the tips from Boodiba and the f/bend, hopefully soon, although now we have blue moon and first of the year...

  8. What's a blue moon? I'm practicing my full 3rd & bit of 4th tomorrow. I like moon day practices sometimes.

  9. A blue moon is a full moon that happens for the second time in the same month... cool right... I just saw the moon here in Miami and it was HUGE... wonder if you can see it in NYC...

But as you say, rules schrules... (liked that, although I probably changed it there)

  10. It doesn't matter if you changed it, because you have artistic license!

That's another thing I like to say when breaking rules.

You know I've never been to Miami!!! I'd like to. Are you practicing with Kino there?

  11. Thanks for the artistic license!

I wanted to practice with Kinno, but my friends live in Doral and I came here exclusively to see my little god children (8 and 10 yrs old)... so if I did go to Miami Beach to practice that would have added like an extra half hour (driving/finding parking) , and I am so into the two little ones right now, I could not bare... so no, this time I did not, next time I hope so.

  13. Thank you Nat!!!! and thanks for noticing the question :) Glo told me how to fix it, but in any event now I am using J's flip... which is HD... H super D... the difference is like Amazing not!... I cant quite tell the difference really.... but it does not come blue. I guess I will use the blue for when there is need for a mood... :)
