Castor Oil Bath

Last Saturday I tried the Castor Oil bath, also known as "Saturday Practice". I've been talking about it in my Spanish blog, and realized it is time to bring it back into the mix of my ashtanga journey.

Kimberly Flynn wrote an excellent article on the whys and benefits of it.

This time I did it the way it is supposed to be done, rubbing the oil even in the scalp!.  I had feared doing this before as I thought it probably would never come out. But it did.

So on Saturday morning I spent 15 minutes in savasana completely covered in the oil, and then took a bath.  I have to say that it does have a tremendous effect on me, every time I take one of these I feel different, read better, in the next practice.

For example, on Sunday I felt that my muscles were gaining heat much faster than usual and flexibility was outstanding.  But what I like the most is the effect on my knees which usually hurt me (I don't have meniscus-es, as they were removed on two operations).  They did not hurt.

I heard people say you need to be careful after a castor oil bath because it is tempting to go further riding the pain-less wave.  So I took it easy.  All in all a great practice.

Up above you can see the oil I use, back when I started this practice I could only get it a Whole Foods but now it is much easier to get it shipped.  Most importantly I have found that the Castle soap  is the best to
remove the grease.

How often to do you do this? if at all...

  1. johnsons & johnsons baby shampoo works well removing the oil. Although, castile soap is more natural. Better route to go ...

  3. I have half a bottle left from when I tried natural induction at the end of my pregnancy. :)
Note: it did not induce me, just made for a long day running back and forth to the toilet.

This sounds like a much mroe appealing use of it!!

  5. Castor Oil? First, Grimmly & Boodiba are using epsom salts, and now castor oil? I've not heard of this... I wonder what the thinking behind it is? How do you feel afterwards during practice? Just really bendy and it helps ease aches/ pains? Anything else? Very interesting!

  7. Castor oil packs are a staple in my work for detox and healing, but I still have never tried a whole body bath. Thanks for giving me the push!

  9. I can say that Oil bath is customarily taken with castor oil that is later removed from the skin and hair with a special herbal paste made of equal parts soap nut and green powders mixed with water.

  10. Great blog, very interesting. I have been doing the dry brushing and oil since learning of it in India, but have been using olive or almond oil. Do you know why castor?

  11. That is a good question Laura, the only reason I know is because Guruji recommended it, but I have taken that on faith... I seem to remember that the castor oil has a lot of good properties, but then again, so does almond... so I am not sure.

When you say you do dry brushing, what does that mean? what is that? really curious here.

    Thanks for your comment

  12. Hi, could someone tell me what is the amount of oil needed ? is 200ml enough. One other thing I did not understand - is the head oil bath separate from the whole body bath (they mentioned only 5 minutes for first session so I was not sure if it is 5 minutes for the head bath or whole body).
    What is green powder ?
    Thank you in advance

  13. Hi Sereia Do Mar,

I usually use about a pint, think of a small ben and jerry pot icecream...that is how much I use.

As per the minutes on each part, there is no absolute rule, you can do hair AND body together for 10 or 15 minutes. As long as you do not over do it on the time you should be fine. Try it and see how it feels :-)
