My friend T  inherited the DVD with which I began my ashtanga pracice, (Darby).  It is a wonderful DVD because you see Darby in all his expertise and then there is Nicole who shows you modified poses.  Not only that, but also if you ever get tired of listening to the English version you can hear it in French.  I remember how helpful it was to get the "easier" versions of the marichasanas for example, so I could go through with the series.

T reports that she gets dizzy in the prasaritas, in her own words: she "sees black".

I suggested that maybe it has to do with the breathing,  that it should be deep and slow, and also to see weather she is fully hydrated.  I also said that it will pass, I used to get really dizzy too, and after a while it kind of went away.

I am so happy that she is doing yoga, and that when I visit her I will have someone to practice with, maybe even to go to Kinno with (she is in Miami).

Any other suggestions for avoiding the dizziness?

  1. I dragged my friend SF Jenny in years ago. I went out to do the Guruji tour & stayed with her & in return paid for her workshop fees. Now she's a Tim Miller person.

  2. That's a great DVD to start with! Darby is from Montreal - he was in Toronto last year and I had a chance to attend a session with him. He's such a lovely person!

    Dizziness in the Prasaritas:
Take it slllooowwwly coming up and BREATH, even pausing for an extra breath at that halfway point (at chatvari; when the hands are on hips). In Prasarita B & C, go ahead and take that extra breath at halfway (even though proper vinyasa is to come straight up). In time, it will get better for her.

  3. I started with this too, my first Ashtanga DVD. Still think it's the best to start with, plus, of course, I was madly in love with Nicole and that accent. Watching Darby, this is how I thought Ashtanga should be, probably explains my obsession with jump backs and float to handstand as well as wanting to do the handstand version of Urdhva kukkutasana. All Darby's fault, not mine. Must fish it out and watch it again,

  4. Hi B, where did you drag Jenny to, SF means San Francisco? got confused with what you said... did your friend also start with Derby and is now a Tim Miller person?

Kaivalya, yes that is good advice, I will have T read the comment herself, she will appreciate it I am sure...

Grimmly, I also feel like watching it again. and I can see how you would have become a little obsessed with the floating, if someone does it is Darby!, such control! and of course it is HIS fault... totally ;-)

  6. darby hosted guruji & fam a few years ago in montreal. it was better than the nyc workshops & much cheaper.

prasarita-breathe, breathe, breathe. the head is below the midline of the body. people can faint very easily in this posture.

this is my experience. very common for students to get dizzy.

  7. Boodiba, well, cool that you got ("dragged) her started, I am sure she is grateful...

Bindy thanks for that, interesting the note that many students get dizzy.
