First led class since... oh dear!, Thailand!

On Thursday as my three day Pure Yoga experience ended I thanked John for letting me practice with him for the short time the shala was clsoed, and he asked me if I was coming on Friday for the led class.  I explained how the pass expired, but he said, "come as my guest", "Come"!.  (Led classes are the ones where the instructor leads the class with the proper Sanskrit count and everyone follows, as opposed to Mysore class where everyone does their own thing)

Can you guess that I was actually also grateful my pass ended on Thursday?  I was not really looking forward to a led class,  but as the universe has its ways, I said "yes! thank you!",  I mean, what an opportunity!, regardless of my feelings... never mind them!.

So I did show up at 6:30 on Friday.  I usually do not like when blog posts speak of something the writer didn't want to do, ended up doing, and turned out to be a blessing in disguise so I will spare you that part, but I will share that I learned a few things:

1- Coming up from all the sited positions, (the ardha badha, trianga, the  janus),  we breathe while still holding to the foot in front, then we breathe out, while still holding, THEN we breathe in and do the jump back... hmm... did not have that one.

2-  I usually dislike  my chaturanga because my back curves in a wierd way, I had received direction from many teachers but I think he nailed it Friday when he said, go all the way to the floor with the sternum.  This made sense as I now understand why people tend to keep their butt up in the air a little, otherwise we would go flat on the floor.

3- The ending Mysore style, where we come to standing to chant the closing, had not done that in ages.

Some curious things included:
  • The fact that the 6:30 led class had a lot of people in it!, about 15, and that most of them were men, only a few women.  The 8:00 AM class was beyond full, I would say about 18 people were waiting, and most of them were women.
  • The people at the reception at Pure are very nice, the woman signing me in told me she cannot let me in anymore without a pass (which I can totally understand!),  and I said to her that John did indeed invite me, that I cannot lie cause I am a yogi... that good old "asteya" principle!  (I like to think of that one as: "asteyaway from what does not belong to you).
I feel such deep gratitude to all yoga teachers, and to the fact that many of them live in the town I live in.

I am curious, when was the last time you took a led class? and how do you feel about them?

  1. I wanna go to the class with all the dudes!!! :) I'm glad you had a good time & am sorry I won't be seeing you next week!

I took Chris's led Primary my first Friday back in town after Goa and then NH last year. I'd gotten back on Thursday & did my 3rd for him. I was fairly desperate to practice with a group, and so I figured I'd do the led. The last time had been four years prior to that, in Mysore with Guruji and Sharath.

When it was over he asked me how I liked it & I said, "I feel like I need to do some yoga now." I think I told you that before. He smirked.

I dunno I've got a whole year with John (unless he decides to quit or something, hopefully not). If he decides to let me practice full 3rd and I don't feel so put-upon and/or deprived anymore, I might not feel compelled to take Fridays off in order to do my own thing over the weekend. We'll see!

So your last led was a year ago... me too. I also took the half led with Christopher back at yoga sutra, I used to enjoy them.

  5. Hi Urbanashtangi, you were there? this is interesting I had completely blanked that I had also been there!

I relate to what you say about the love/hate relationship, I am the same way, and yes, they can be hard, at least I remember the Sharath one being VERY hard, it kicked me into form in chaturanga, now I really take my time there, I used to fly through it, but not after his led! :-)

  6. I FLY through practice, I prefer it that way. When I go slow I end up thinking too much about things which makes it harder then it needs to be. Guruji also said practice should be brisk.

I stood up from backbend after doing Sharaths led class for just a week!!

We should do led on a saturday sometime!!!

    See you in the morning!!

  7. I actually got a chance to go to class (led)a few weeks ago. As I knew I wouldn't have to be teaching I arrived with blueberry stained hands, and my hair was a bit of a mess (would never teach like that). I was so happy to unroll my mat at the back of the class and remain anonymous, but the teacher decided to use me to demonstrate each and every pose (because I teach in her studio and she knows I am capable).Ugh, I just despised being on display like that, but hey, all in the name of Iyengar Yoga.

  8. Dhana, oh dear!!! what a situation, just when you thought you were going to be totally anonymous and enjoy the practice!!! AND with the blueberry hands... funny how the universe finds a way to make us surrender again and again!

Urbanashtangi, after reading what you just wrote I think next time Sarath is in town I will take the whole week or whatever he does, maybe I will stand up too!!! and yes, I remember someone mentioning that when Jois did the led class people nicknamed them the Pattabhi express... because they were "brisks" indeed....
