Ignorance: Thou are the reason!

The study of the Yoga Sutras continues and it has turned into a delight for me.  I love singing the Sanskrit sounds, there is magic in them, and the whole room fills up with energy as I practice.  Here is why I started this series.

If you feel like chanting along the video below, see here and scroll down to Book 2 (the chapter on Practice which is where I am starting for this reason)

What you hear in the video recording here are Book 2, and sutras 1 through 4.  They deal with the impediments to Samadhi (eternal peace without disturbance, even if someone close to you pushes your buttons)

Avidya or IGNORANCE is the main issue says Patanjali. There are Kleshas -afflictions- or the specifics of how ingorance manifests, but they are all underlined by Ignorance herself, she is at the base of all of them.

The kleshas are:

Nescience: lack of knowledge
Ego
Desire
Aversion
Clinging to life

Pretty much the feelings and sensations one deals with when sitting in a Vipassana meditation retreat, while observing the rejections and the desires and maintaing equanimity.

This is the main book I am using, by Edwin F. Bryant, and find it very helpful.

  1. So beautiful your chanting. Do you also listen to Jayashree? I have the CD of Mr. Ramaswami chanting the Sutras also. I must devote more time to learning the Sutras. You have inspired me.
