Bellow is a chart from Goggle Trends on how many times people searched the word "ashtanga" throughout the years. In my own mind, I have my own predictions -charts or not- but I thought I would ask YOU guys first! I know that yoga is not a popularity contest, but do indulge me with your thoughts.
Do you think Ashtanga Yoga is increasing in popularity?
In case you wonder about the "peak" letters:
A is from 2006, about a teacher about to give a workshop.
B and C have been removed. Interestingly enough C was the passing of Sri K.Pattabhi Jois.

D is an article from an Indian newspapers who uses the word Diva in the title but does not talk about divas at all, instead, it actually informs me of the price Indians pay at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. Misleading title if there was one.
Finally E, who comes to spike up the trend again is an article about a John Scott workshop from 2010.

Ahem, Did anyone else hear that if you encounter Ashtanga in this lifetime- it is a hard to come by blessing/boon earned from having done yoga in a previous life? So let's hope there is a truckload of people alive right now who will reap the benefits of having done yoga before....:)
ReplyDeleteHmm, i'm unable to comment because I really don't know what the state of Ashtanga is like in my own country (hides my head in shame). But John, I think, is a wonderful teacher - he taught my teacher (who's no longer teaching, I don't know why) - I hope one day I would be able to commit the time needed for teachers' training with JOhn.
ReplyDeleteBut first, David Swenson is up on 1 May in SIngpore - i've signed up for that, and can't wait :)
@Sereneflavor, ha ha, I like your "Ahem!" start of the sentence... and YES! let's hope... ever since writting this article I have been thinking about that, about how lucky i-we are to have stumbled upon it...
ReplyDeleteCory, I have heard wonders about David SWenson, I think the "Yogabloke" just took a course with him and there is a few other bloggers also talking great stuff about his teachings and how sweet he is, you are lucky!, and as per John, if you mean Campbell, I know what you mean, he is magical... is him the John you meant? you do not have to answer if you prefer privacy... also I was curious about what is your country, is it Singapore?
John as in John Scott. He used to come down pretty often, but not so much anymore. He is very close to my teacher and John is my teacher's teacher. Does that make him my grand teacher?? haha!
ReplyDeleteThe sunny island of Singapore sits at the south tip of Peninsula Malaysia and is surrounded by exotic Indonesia in Southeast Asia. Among other things, we are known as a "fine" island because chances are we are the only country in the world that has got a fine for everything - from littering to chewing gum. Our senior minister, Lee Kuan Yew, liberated Singapore from Malaysia and is still alive.(google him).
BUT, we have an abundance of good food, and we have Little India here (which is really colourful) where one can find authentic Indian food.
so come one day?
Grand Teacher, ha ha , that is funny.
ReplyDeleteI love how you describe Singapore, and yes, will google Lee Kuan Yew. One more thing you have is Singapore Air, which has my favorite airplane in its fleet the airbus 380, the biggest plane... :-)
