No cameras today, just a sea of students, one guy per every six or seven women, some lulu lemon but not that much, pretty much no Jois clothing, although it looks nice. Might check it out tomorrow.
We got ourselves a spot much closer than where the mat had landed for practice and in order to better hear the conference. We found a perfect mat-free oasis near the windows on the right about fifteen meters from the center stage.
Sharath quoted the "shastras" (scriptures), and said long sentences in Sanskrit which, much as I try, I can never place. I was hoping that my modest yoga sutra/Sanskrit studies would one day bring fruit and I would recognize a word here and there, but is not to be. At least not yet.
"in Ashtanga Yoga we have three parts -he is talking about asana-, the first or primary series, second and advanced"
More Sansrkrit.
"The primary Series is our yoga teraphy, it is called the "chikitsa" which means that. We use the primary series for healing"... "The primary series has a very important posture in it: paschimotanasana, -foward bends-, which are repeated throughout and in many variations. When we practice paschimotanasana we need to breathe deeply there, this ignites the agny, or fire in the navel, which in turn purifies the body".
He talked and even joked about how it is difficult to find food that has no pestiscides in it, how even if we buy organic we never really know. So primary series is the cleansing, the healing, the chikitsa. That is the teraphy of this lineage.
Unhappy with my inability to pint-point which book he was quoting from I was the first one in line to ask: "Many scriptures" he said with a radiant smile, "there is not only one". The Pradipika? The Sutras? I insisited. "Yes, and also the Upanishads which are part of the Vedas".
Shy and conscious of the line forming behind I thanked and moved away wondering. He must have a tremendous body of Sanskrit sacred literature in his head.
Last day tomorrow and the cameras will be on. Last Friday I practiced to the stream and it was a joyful experience. I have heard of some people who will be driving to a location to practice to the stream, will you be joining?

ReplyDeleteThanks, Claudia! I missed a few words here and there, and I was in, what, about the 4th row? I don't know how people way in the back hear anything....
