Sharath Conference in New York City Today: Keep Practicing and Don't Stop

So sweet to practice with Sharath this morning.  I think this is the first lecture in which I hear him talk about pranayama.  I  typed as I listened, this is what he said in conference, after the led primary series:
  • Guru means who takes us shows us the brightness
  • my grandfather was that kind of  a guru he used to teach us to get rid of the ignorance in us, that makes him a guru
  • we have to do our practice, once we have that knowledge, then the brightness we feel is the brightness in us
  • This happens only though practice, practice yoga. Yoga means union.
  • We need to practice not only asana, this is just  a limb in ashtanga (eight limb) yoga.
  • Guruji said 99% practice 1 %   - people like to talk and do lectures, but when one practies then the students also follow.
  • 99% practice means not only asana but also yama niyama, practically, in your life
  • ahimsa satya asteya bramacharya aparigraha are the yamah
  • niyama saucha santosha tapas vadyaya Ishvarapranidhana are the niyamas
  • Take for example ahimsa: non violence. If I do asana but then go punch someone or fight, then what is the use of practicing yoga?
  • Yoga means you should try to understand what is ahimsha, to be true.
  • once you are true you don't need to fear
  • when body and mind is stable then we do not have delusions, that is why we practice asana to purify the body
  • then you can follow yama and niyamas
  • so that is why asana is important to purify the body
  • Yoga sutras says yama niyama is the first two limbs, then asana is the third then pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi
  • yama niyama should be practiced while doing asanas,  so it is very important
  • then you should practice pranayama. It should be practiced with proper guidance from your teacher, only a teacher who has learned from a guru, just reading books is not recommended.
  • Only once you have mastered asanas then take pranayama
  • you have to follow a system. If you follow that it is easy to learn to get the knowledge
  • Thank you for coming here and practicing, I know some students come from far away, and I would like to thank Sonia for making this happen. The Jois family alone could not make this happen
  • Thank you God Bless you, keep practicing don't stop!

  9. Hi Lila, I like that one too... very true. This week I have been exploring "daring and allowing myself permission", and I think it does come down to trusting and being true to what we are, then permission is granted. So I loved it too, fear does go when we know what we offer is true!
