Lyme Disease: 10+ Days With No Practice

Remember when I was feeling tingling legs a week or so ago and how I blamed it on iron deficiency? It was  good guess, but when the next morning, right after that post, I collapsed at 8 in the morning and could not move for the rest of the day out of a deep and strong fatigue James suggested we visit the doctor the next morning. We did.

Blood tests were done together with all routine checks and: Nothing!

My main doctor, a woman who is very inclined towards alternative medicine called me and talked to me.  The test for Lymme (an epidemic in the area of the Hudson River where I live) had come negative.  She asked me question after question, she listened. I am blessed to have her and her team (including the original doctor that did the tests) as my doctors.

My symptoms are:

  • extreme fatigue (cannot do anything after 8 AM for pretty much the whole rest of the day). The fatigue I am talking about is not just being tired, it is one where the body gives up and moving it is an enterprise
  • Joint pain
  • A feeling as if the muscles were sucking into my bones on my right arm and leg (which I confused with restless leg syndrome)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Confusion
  • Forgetting things
  • Depression and bursts of crying
I did not get the usual 'bulls eye' target that people get when they are beaten by a tick, which is what causes the disease.  Ticks live in deers and they jump and latch onto people's legs, hair, arms.  If one finds such a thing in ones own body, it must  be removed carefully as it is not the tick but the venom that it releases into the blood stream that causes the disease.
Pictures are a bit too graphic, so a drawing may go easier on the eye

Because my blood test came so outstanding (I am probably the healthiest person I know), the doctor guessed that the symptoms are indicative of Lyme for two reasons 1) the epidemic proportions in this area and 2) It is unlikely to appear in blood tests up until 6 weeks from the time it was contracted.

And so she put me in antibiotics and there I am.  Still incapable of moving much, but very HAPPY that it is being treated earlier.  If the disease is not treated, meaning if people ignore the fatigue or the bulls-eye, it can cause paralysis, attack the nervous system, attack the heart and even cause death.

Yesterday, during my 'night-time-hour' window of relative energy I searched for "yoga and Lyme".

I can tell you the furthest thing from my mind right now is to get on the mat. I tried, I collapsed.  I tried again, it made things worst.  Pranayama, which was a suggestion from James feels yucky because of the shortness of breath, but I suppose it could help.

My fear with asana is that there is a poison within the body and doing asana could contribute to expand it throughout.  I could be wrong, so I went to the page of Dr. Migdow, a Kripalu doctor who is also a yogi, this is what he had to say:

Asana and Lyme:
Yoga and pranamaya can also be a wonderful support in recovering from Lyme disease, energizing and relaxing the body so that the immune system can work more effectively Postures like Cobra, Pigeon, Boat, Bow and Fish expose and open the chest, stimulating the thymus gland which aids in immune function.

Pranayama and Lyme:
Practicing 80 to 100 repetitions of kapalbhati every two or three hours brings more oxygen to the brain, compensating for decreased blood flow; alternative nostril kapalabhati integrates the two hemispheres of the rain. Within a week of practicing kapalabhati several times daily, many people feel much clearer mentally and more able to concentrate.

The key word in Dr Migdow's recommendations is "recovering". I mean, if only I could sit down!

I feel that this might be possible as the antibiotics begin to work and I regain some energy.  On the first day for example I think I would have vomited if I tried kapalabhati, or even a modest cobra pose.  Right now I feel the collapse coming along and sitting for pranayama feels sickening.  I may have to wait one more day or two, or three.  I have made peace with patience and it does not feel too bad, I am loving the respect and care I am giving my body.  I trust that good things will come out of it.

I haven not stopped taking any of the other supplements, which means that by the time I started on antibiotics my body and immune system was strong.  I continue to take:
  • Liquid vitamin B (for better absorption)
  • Maca a powder that comes from a Peruvian plant rich in iron
  • Vitamin D (my tests indicated I was low on it)
  • Vitamin C
  • Lots of water
  • Calcium and Magnesium
  • Centrum Women (a full vitamin complex)
  • Probiotics
  • Antibiotics
  • Huge doses of laughter from James.  What would I do without him?
There are lots of gifts that are coming out of all this too, of course and I will be writing about it.

Last night I dreamed that I went to a new yoga studio where John was teaching Ashtanga and I was oh so ready to practice. Only thing, I did not have a mat, and nobody wanted to share!.  That is how much I miss it.  Do me a favor please, enjoy your practice for me! I will feel it.

  3. Quentin, wow, scary stuff, I am so glad to hear he is well, not sure I could take horror stories right now so I am glad he made it!!! god bless! And I am taking care, I feel it is important, I am looking for the gifts in the quietness, in the silence, in the spaces where I cannot even think, which from a yoga perspective is already a gift, somehow... :-)

  9. Denise, thank you, I feel it, so much so I was able to come to the computer :-) this energy sending works ;-)

David, Joy, it means the world that you guys are here, feeling the support, I am taking lots of rest, will rest more in your honor and Joy's, thank you!!! I am sure I will be back soon, praying so! :-)

Nobel, yeah, me too and it is indeed a blessing that it was caught so early, thank you.

SF, good point. The truth is, all this staying quiet and suddenly, just for a limited period of time having no responsibilities has highlighted a lot more how indeed all shall pass, and that all is as it should... I find enlightenment to be found in moments of silence, when it is possible to observe the play of the sun in the shadows of the bedroom wall... it all seems perfectly well...

  10. Sick?, so sorry to hear that Claudia, no asana, no pranayama, can imagine how frustrated you must feel, always scriptural study though, you can get the 'Thirty yoga upanishads' on the kindle app, work out what your saving by not going to Pure and you can spend it on books : ) Sure James is being very sweet and revelling in the opportunity to take care of you or at least have you sit still for ten minutes. Be well soon.

  11. Yeah, thanks Grimm, it is VERY frustrating not to be able to do anything. Rading I get some "windows" where I can, but concentration is not as great yet... maybe when the antibiotics kick in full force... did you know you could get ALL 30 upanishads in kindle, I have one abbreviated version only, something to look into..and yes James makes me laugh, which is the best medicine...

  12. Really really sorry that you're sick, I'm glad to see though that you still have the energy to blog and reply to comments. Hope you get well soon.

I read an interview with Eileen Hall where she shared that she did her practice in her head when she was recovering from breast cancer. She visualized each asana and paced her breath accordingly. If the itch to practice gets too intense, that's an alternative you could consider :) Sending get well hugs to you.

Thinking of you and sending you good vibes. BTW, Co Enzyme Q 10, approx 150mg three times daily may be helpful in the recovery phase. Will think of you in the prayer before and after practice today. Leaving for our shala very soon this morning in Sydney

  21. Claudia, what an unexpected turn in your path, but it's inspiring how you have an attitude of equanimity about it. Sending lots of healing energy your way from the Sunshine State! Take rest, and don't hurry or push to try to do anything that doesn't feel good yet--like my yoga teacher Krista Shirley says, "All you have is time"

  23. Dear Claudia,

I started to read your blog recently, and your honest and fun attitude gives me a lot of inspiration in my practice. Reading you became sick and need to refrain from asana practice for some time I dedicated my practice today for your wellbeing. I hope these collective efforts and good thoughts might mtitgate your 'dis-ease'.

    All bests.

  24. Kovitimi, that is very sweet, I sense I feel the dedication of asana, because my cravings are eased... I love that! and I really appreciate very much your dedication of the practice. How blessed am I? Gratitude!

YFC, thank you. Will head to your blog for a laugh or two... nothing like humor. oh, and by the way, I would love to hear your thoughts on Yoga Teraphy, just mustered enough energy to write a post which ended up being close to a manifesto (Lyme works in mysterious ways), and was wondering what you think... :-)

  25. Claudia,

i hope you are feeling at least a little better. be assured you will get better MUCH faster than anyone taking care of you expects, but not as fast as you would like to. as for practice, trust your own self, the physician within. your practice will ultimately help you get better, but only you will know when to start and what to do.

    hang in there.

  26. Claudia-my husband contracted lyme about 4 years ago. The bulls-eye rash, the fevers, the antibiotics. He now has chronic lyme and we've run up medical bills to see the very best doctors we could. For some reason in the south they do not believe in chronic lyme disease, but sadly his health deteriorated right after he contracted it. We've done a lot on our own to work with his symptoms (tired legs, sore and swollen joints/hips). He finds that royal jelly taken daily helps his inflammation. He also enjoys yin yoga to help with tightness. Just wanted to share this with you. We've had to find a balance between doctors and out own findings. It wasn't easy, but we've learned so much! Hugs to you and let me know if I can do anything!

  27. Claudia - my heart really goes out to you. I had Lyme Disease years ago and it was a long recovery for me, mainly because I could find a good doctor and suffered for a long time before treatment. I wanted to share with you a few things that helped me to recover/get better:

    - Food: I stopped eating processed foods and avoided all sugar, dairy, and other acidic foods. I tried to stick with alkaline-rich foods. And ate foods that were considered low-glycemic to keep my blood sugar stable.

As far as eating, I would eat small meals every 3-4 hours. A big meal takes too much energy for the body to digest. When I made these changes, my joint pain was significantly decreased, and I wasn't so tired after eating - which helped my energy levels throughout the day.

    - Medication/Vitamins: I learned that I shouldn't take any other medication or vitamins within 2 hours of taking my antibiotic, because they may interact with the antibiotic so that it won't be as effective.

Also, it helped me when I spaced my vitamins out. I noticed that taking too many vitamins/supplements each day was not helping me. I also avoided taking too many vitamins at the same time because it was too hard on my system.

    - REST: this was so important for me. I know it is difficult to just sit around, but that is what your body needs right now. The more you fight it, the longer it will take to recover. Also, I tried sleeping pills, but they caused me problems, not only didn't I not get a "restful" sleep, but the next day, I would have a rapid heart beat, and would get dizzy when standing.

Meditation: this takes so little energy, and I was able to do it lying down. One of my favorite things to do was to listen to Deepak Chopra on my iPod.

I also noticed that music helped me - my favorites are RA MA DA SA and Heaven's Touch CDs from Joseph Michael Levry. I still listen to Heaven's Touch every night to help me sleep (and when I get acupuncture).

Acupuncture really helped (saved) me. It was really what got me back to "normal." One thing I learned was that I needed "gentle" acupuncture - not too many needles, as that would actually take away my energy. So the lady I went to only used a few needles on the front and did cupping on my back (which helped with my immune system). If you decide to do acupuncture, make sure you find someone good.

I know this must be such a difficult time for you, but remember that you will get better.

What I learned from my whole ordeal is that "energy" is a precious commodity and I have to be very selective on how I use it. I stay away from negativity and negative people. I use my energy to do things that make me happy.

I found you through reading James' blog - which, by the way, I am so addicted to reading it - it is part of my "daily practice."

I wish you all the best!!

  28. Claudia,

My 20 year old son got lyme disease this summer. Your blog helped me appreciate how he must have been feeling. Another gift.

  29. Flo, I am sorry about your husband. I am also educating myself very much on everything, today specifically I bought the jelly which you recommended, and I am taking SO many other things! and they all help. A blessing for me was a recommendation in facebook to read THE LYME DISEASE SOLUTION, probably you read it? it is by a doctor who faced the problems you mention and he had it too, long term... anyway, thought I would mention just in case.

Autum, I appreciate your list. I reflected on it for a long time and starting spacing things out too. The antibiotic goes ALONE now, in the morning and evening, and the supplements at different times and not all at once every day... I am getting to know how my body reacts to each one, today it seems to have really liked Ginko Balboa, Vitamine B5, Cats Claw and liquid B Complex... it gave me a bit of energy as gratitude... I also heard lots about accupuncture, I will be looking for a practitioner in this area, I would love to try it, lots of Lyme patients seem to speak very favourably of it. Thank you!

Anon, I am glad it did, it is a very confusing type of disease... thanks for reading and appreciating your soon, god bless him and may he be healed in full.

  30. I have LD, and as such search high and low for information - yet, never searched yoga and lyme, despite having a daily practice! So thanks - my fogged up head has some searching to do... :)

"A feeling as if the muscles were sucking into my bones on my right arm and leg" - I hadn't thought of it like that, but it's rather accurate!

Sending healing vibes your way, as I sit with shortness of breath and a heavy chest...

  31. Claudia, Please make sure that your blood was also checked for co-infections. I was infected in the same area you live and the tick carried two things. Make sure you are going to an LLMD (Lyme Literate MD).

  32. Thanks JD, I will probably have a full blood exam at some point, but now I have moved to traditional Chinese Medicine... I want to recover first and I trust this new apprach.
