Are you just getting started with Ashtanga Yoga? Well, here is a very nice video on the sun salutations with Kino, enjoy! and salute that sun, it will bring you energy :-)
Last Sunday's New Blog Times: End of the Critique (or so I thought)

Great vid! Did my first sun salute yesterday ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Claudia,
ReplyDeleteNice video. Thanx
With the Sun Salutations that I always did, there never were jumps. You know, the ones where, a round is performed on the right and the next on the left to complete one cycle.
Now, I am trying to incorporate jumps. I can jump backwards fairly smoothly, but my jump forwards are jerky, I land with my feet splayed (not parallel) & an inch or two behind my original foot placement (where I started out).
Still practicing, hope I can get it.

RV, good for you!!! so excited that you did :-)
ReplyDeleteAnon/Deepa, I hear you, my jump forwards have a LOT to be worked on as well, they take years... and that is OK, I am open to patience, especially as of lately... you WILL get it and you kow it, I can see it :-)
Hello Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI am from India and started doing the Suryanamskar lately.I came to your blog via twitter and then ended up watching this video.I'm an absolute novice but all that I learnt from books and other teachers,I think you missed a step in between or perhaps altered it.That step when one jumps back is what I'm talking about.
Could you please suggest how many should one start with and how to increase the number?I really want to shed some flab!
Gunjan, thanks for your comment, I feel I need to clarify this is not my own video but rather Kino Macgregor's video, a certified ashtanga yoga teacher.
ReplyDeleteShe is doing one demonstration of Surya A, and one demonstration of Surya B. Normally we would do 5 Surya A and 3 Surya B at the shala in Mysore, or if it is hot and we are at home, maybe 3 and 3. But nothinkg is missing.. I am wondering what you are referring to.
For example, on the first sun salute after he forward bends and straightens the back he does jump back into chaturanga, then up and down dog then the give coutnts and then hedoes jump forward.
Even in the Surya B he has the jump back followed by up/down dog and the jump forward.
I wonder, and I would really like to know, what is it that you think is missing?
Thanks for reply Claudia. For your ease here's a picture of various steps of Suryanamskar.

Notice, after the third step(ie bending down forward),this video says you jump back but normally as far I knew we take just one leg behind as in step 4 and then in 5 step we take the other leg behind too doing the dog pose. That's why two cycles of Suryanamskar makes one round(with each leg going back and balancing on) at a time.
Wow!I manage to do more than that but then Suryanamskar is the only exercise I perform.
Thanks for the motivation, Claudia!!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I am still reading your book, a bit every night before going to bed. Its so wonderfully written. Thank You Again

Gunjan, that is great, I appreciate the photo, now I understand. Here is the thing, many traditional yoga styles utilize this way of practicing surya namaskar, I was just reading, where was it? gosh I cant remember cause of this sickness I have, but was just reading a book that described it that way.
ReplyDeleteIn the book "Surya Namaskar" by Pattabji Jois (the lineage I follow of Ashtanga which sprouts of course, from Krishnamacharya), the Surya Namaskar is actually different, with an A and a B form which are exactly as described in the video.
You are giving me an idea for a post to see if we can find out what lineages/styles/tradition utilize the Jois sun salute or the sun salute you show...
So, it all comes down to the fact that in Ashtanga Yoga this is how we practice it :-)
Does that answer your question?
Deepa you are welcome, and thanks for telling me about reading the book :-) it makes me gigle in happiness ;-)
ReplyDeleteDear Claudia, you're more versed with yoga than I'm and I haven't learnt it from any guru.Infact,I came to know of this A and B type only after reading this post so I am not qualified to answer the semantics.I learnt Suryanamaskar when I was about 14-15 but never really practiced it though google and books otherwise always lead to the form of Suryamaskar that I posted.Maybe, there are more than one way.Glad to know :).
ReplyDeleteOh we are in the same boat, I learn something new every day, even different teachers call different positions by different names, and there are many variations... it is full world out there when it comes to yoga, I am glad you pointed me to this drawing, I do believe that is a very popular way of practicing, I think it was at Integral Institute that they did it that way, it has been a long time since I;ve been there...
ReplyDeleteanyways, is nice to meet you, hope you keep visiting!
