How's the Lyme Going?

Like crap.

I usually wake up, have the first antibiotic with food (learned that lesson rather well by now) and then, say, one or two hours of reading or helping James with his new book -about to be published-, Aaaanddd... I am out! Gone with the wind, or out of wind,  in bed, no reading, no writing, barely sometimes able to watch a show or read a blog or two.

Been watching Breaking Bad, which does not really help cause there is a lot of cursing in it, and the Lyme makes me angry -it is one of its notorious side effects-, so even James goes: "now, now, Claudia" (how did it get to that?), when I am speaking like a drunk truck driver who has just been given an unfair ticket, or one that he thinks is unfair.

The ONE thing I am learning through the disease, which is interesting, is how long it takes me to recover from small and big angers.  Just to clarify, we all get angry, or maybe you don't I don't know, but I do, often.

This or that happens and I get angry, and ALL OF THE ANGERS have a certain "recovery time" until I can get back to peace.

Let me clarify by giving you an example of something that makes me angry and the time it takes me to clear the air and get back to peace, or focusing on other things, more productive things, like healing:

  1. When I realized I would not be able to participate in the demonstration show at the local yoga studio where I am about to start teaching, cause I am sick. Time to recover: 1 week
  2. I find out my insurance cost has gotten higher.  Time to recover 30 minutes
  3. There is no more toilette paper. Time to recover 30 seconds
  4. James has made a mess of cereal around his desk and did not sweep it as promised. Time to recover: 1 minute and a half.  Provided there are kisses and it gets done, otherwise it can go up to 4 minutes. But he is adorable and always helps.
  5. Uncomfortable comment at the blog. Time to recover 20 minutes
  6. Bursts of anger at not being able to stand up and do things around the house and write and do my practice. Time to recover: between 20 minutes and 2 hours. Depending on the day
  7. Guy from Direct TV calling me to offer a great deal and not giving me a straight answer when I tell him he is required by law to tell me if he is trying to sell me something, then telling him to never ever call me again etc. Time to recover: 5 minutes.
These are just some examples, anger floats, comes and goes, sometimes I recover and then later on I find myself talking to the bathroom mirror and speaking again to the Direct TV guy.

That is the thing about being sick, it makes you incredibly sensitive to where your energy goes and how it gets spent. It is a great yoga exercise in observing the mind!

So I am taking notes, calculating times, and beginning to follow the "not useful" rule. It is not useful to be angry at the Direct TV guy, I mean, really? c'mon! I need all my energy to heal.

And so re-directing energy is what I am doing, measuring it, watching it, observing it closely.

Treatment continues, I have had changes in protocols (as they call them) many times.  Will have a full post on the thing when I am done for anyone else who might benefit but for now suffice to say I am having a window of energy, I am writing, I am happy, and there is nothing to be angry about.

  1. I've got this image of Salesman consulting some yogi list and knocking on their doors or calling, thinking they'll be a nice easy going laid back and possibly easy mark. Unknown to them there's also a yogi with lyme list : )

Now here is kind of a chisme: I don't have a TV, but I happen to know that one of the talented actors in the series you like(fried chicken restaurant owner I think) is a yogi with a most beautiful dedicated ashtanga practice. Thought you might like that....

    Grimmly, HA HA HA, yes he was DEFINITELLY not expecting that kind of an answer from a yogi, I really channeled a taught lawyer, wish I had recorded it...

    Serene, that is a good idea, most of the time I get what is known as he "cave" effect (talk about yoga symbolism) where all I want is a dark room with no noise, but on occasion i have been able to listen to a song or two and it does uplift me...

    Pollo is an ashtangi? SERIOUSLY?!!! I LOVE THAT!! he is in amazing shape and has a drishti I am envious of which I guess you would need in his circumstances!

  5. hang in there. thanks for being so honest about the disease. you will overcome it and be that much stronger when you do. at this point, in my opinion, i might suggest doing kundalini yoga in the few hours you have as it is not that taxing on the body (at least not compared to ashtange) and i believe there are specific sets to counteract disease. of course, not sure if even that is possible given your current fatigue. best of luck and warm wishes. you'll make it through.

    Anon, is interesting that you mention this. Ever since I came down with this I started re-reading Swami Radha's "Kundalini for the West", and it has been an eye opener. My practice turned completely inwards and I started to explore kundalini (no asana involved, just mostly clarification, prayer, mantra singing, dream work)...

    So yes, I would agree with you, it is THE style of yoga (minus asana) that helps, whenever there are windows of energy.

  8. Have you ever listened to Depak Chopra's audio casette, "Unconditional Life"?

    I thought it was extremely powerful and made me feel calm and happy each time I listened to it.

    I also recommend that you try taking some garlic capsules and ginger capsules. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and ginger is according to Chopra, the "queen of herbs."

    I had the flu last year and it turned into a bad case of pneumonia. My doctor put me on antibiotics and warned that I would need to be hospitalized if i didn't pull out of it.

    Things turned around when I started taking the garlic and ginger capsules. I wish you happiness and delight.

    Anon, I listened to LOTS of Deepak, my favorite is "The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire", but I had never heard of "Unconditional Life", guess he published SO many books and CDs that at some point I lost track!

    As per the garlic and ginger, thanks or the tip. I have been reading a lot of books on Lyme and aparently there is something called Samanto, or something like that which is an antibiotic too (natural) for the lyme, but the thing is anbitiotics natural or not, need a break in between them... so I have to be careful. I have garlic here and also ginger, I am "experimenting" on how my body reacts, I feel like a chemist, constantly working and finding out what heals, what gives energy etc... it is a full time job.

    I am glad this worked for you on the pneumonia! hospitals... hm, I am very weary of them... good thing you did not have to go. I appreicate you took the time to write and will look into the chopra thing. :-)
