Open Happiness

I'd like to give the world Mula Bandha
Mula Bandha is what we roughly translate in the west as "tightening the anus".  Mula=root. Bandha=Lock.

I know, not pretty all this talk about the anus... sorry for those in the audience that get a little disturbed when I refer to scatological things or surrounding areas.

HOWEVER, Mula Bandha is CRITICAL in the practice of poses or asanas.  Furthermore, it is critical to daily living.  Sharath told us in conference last February that we should engage it "all day long".  How do you like them apples?

Many teachers forget all about it or don't mention it at all, unless of course, they are into Ashtanga or the tradition of Krishnamacharya.

Paradoxically tightening the muscles of the perineum is of the utmost importance to the practice of asana.

It all starts with this gross idea, ugh, I have to do what?, but eventually we feel how the action roots us to the ground, makes asanas easier, yes you read that right "easier" and sends the energy upwards (as we engage the following lock)

In daily life we also become more conscious of where our energy is "leaking", as in where are we spending time with people who say are our friends but in reality just steal our time, attention, money, life force.

I saw this picture in google+ and had to share it.  I grew up addicted to Coca Cola and I love the idea of redirecting my thoughts to this concept instead, ORRRRR using mula bandha, or tightening my energy to focus it on this rather than on sugary unhealthy areas of life.

May we all be happy.

  1. Very nice post, Claudia. The Coca Cola sign brings up a lot of wonderful memories for me, too, being an ex-Coke-addict myself :-) It also brings up a certain song ("I'd like to teach the world to... squeeze their collective anuses?!").

You have inspired me to write a post about this. Coming soon. You must be getting better, since I see that you seem to have gotten back into the rhythm of posting daily?

  2. Quentin, thanks I will, and i am working on the logistics for videos, I appreciate you asking.

Nobel, thanks, yeah, coca cola was the drug for me too! and ha ha ha ha squeeze ... ha ha ha funny.

I cannot wait to see your post, and as per the rythm, not really, i just had my two hours of energy this morning and that is when the action happened, then I slept all day other than having a cardio sonogram, which i did not know existed...

Good luck this weekend! i am sending light your way :-)

  4. Mula Bandha is also a key technique in many Chinese/Daoist schools of Qigong, meditation, and internal alchemy, though it is often called hui yin lock or "closing the earthly door" - and the same recommendation often applies - do it all the time.

  6. Hi Claudia,

so sorry to hear you're not well. Hope it's getting a little easier each day...

You may remember, you kindly sent me your book and I love it...was just thinking though, put that lovely Mula Bandha logo on to T-shirts and I suspect they'd be a sell out!!! I'd certainly wear one...'namaste motherfucker' would be a great alternative but suspect would raise eyebrows from the 'real' yoga police!!

    Get better soon,
    Katharine from England

Tom, I did not know that, very interesting!

Min, maybe that helps? spent the whole day after that in bed, but for those two hours I had glorious energy, and it felt so good.

KateR, ha ha ha, I LOVE both ideas, I am not sure I would dare wear the Namaste M... but definitelly this one! thanks for making me laugh
