Pranayama Plans Interrupted

Many of my big plans, interrupted.  I had a root canal on Thursday.  I thought it would all be gone by Friday. Not the case.

I keep waking up in the middle of the night with sharp pains and having to take that awful medicine, vicodin.  I had heard that people like vicodin, that it makes you get "high" or something. To me it rather made me paranoid, I started hearing things and could not even sleep.

Last night I woke up twice with sharp colorful bursts of pain, but I refused to take any more medicine. No more of that which interrupts my yoga. Today is the next appointment to see how things are going.  The problem was that there were four roots and a lot of drilling and pounding had to happen, guess that is why, I had a drill go into my jaw, repeatedly and for like 1.5 hours. It is no wonder.

I have managed to practice on Sunday but not yesterday, and today, well, its moon day.

But my plans have been grandiose, I have been wanting to add pranayama -again-  to my meditation routing, nadi shodhana at least to begin with.  Krishnamacharya speaks so highly of pranayama:

  • "to cure the ills of the body use the body, to cure the wondering of the mind practice pranayama"
or consider this on the "power of pranayama practice"
  • One develops strength in the bones, bone marrow and the heart; one develops the brain, the head, the anna kosam, the fat layer, the mana kosam, the strength of breath and prana, and longevity; it sharpens the intellect and the voice and purifies the blood
  • A man can live in his body for as long as he wishes, not just one hundred years. But for that, prana vayu siddhi is essential -to keep pranaya vayu under one's control-.  If prana vayu is to be kept under our control pranayama is the most important tool. Our ancestors followed these useful instructions and so lived as long as they wished and served as a support for the people of this world. But now day by day, we keep destroying the techniques of pranayama. We mistrust our history and the great people who came before us and undertake physical exercises that are dangerous to our lives As a result we age within a few years of birth...
I am not sure where it was that I read Ramaswami say that he sometimes likes to just "just up and listen to his guru", that is when he reaches for the Yoga Makaranda, where these experts come from.

I can relate.

But life gets on the way sometimes.  Maybe I will sing mantras so the pain will go away, and ask the doctor to help me out too.  I miss my daily routines.  I don't like pain.  Then again, I realize it is just another opportunity to work on other areas, read the masters, write, rest.

Happy moon day.

  3. Hello Claudia, may the new moon take away at least some of your pain, so that you can heal quickly. Rest well. Popular Chinese saying: "To rest is to prepare for a longer journey."

Yyogini, yes, good idea, my husband yesterday had full mouth surgery as well -seems it was on the charts for us to undergo this together- and he god a different medication. I "borrowed" half -I think it is called percoset or something- and htat was a LOT Better... so yes, western medicine -when we find the right thing- rocks!

Hopefully it wont interfeer with my practice today!

one positive thing that came out of the ache though, is the gratitude i feel and the "newfound" awareness for my body and all it does for me during an "ordinary day" :)
