You don't tell me what is wrong with you, I tell you. Said the doctor smiling and in a sweet voice. That was new. After 46 days on antibiotics I was left in ruins, depleted of all energy and not even sure if healed from Lyme disease.
Dr. H. has a little shop in Manhattan filled with Chinese herbs he picks in China himself. He does not trust shipping.
My landlord recommended him. He said how he once could not walk because his right leg was acting up, and after 3 visits with Dr. H he was healed. I was sold. Wanted to meet him. So about a week ago we ventured into Dr. H. office. My first visit to NYC in ages.
The Visit
We started with the date of birth which he looked in an ancient book and told me, among other things, that my element is earth. I knew there had to be something behind the Blog being EarthYogi dot blogspot.
He took my pulse in the way the do it in Thailand or India, or China (not the American way). He did not count anything but rather "felt" the serpent of my pulse with three fingers. I read in a yoga book that it can indicate imbalances depending on which of the three fingers registers a higher or lower variation and on the quality of it.
He touched my hand and feet and pressed points. Every point hurt. Badly.
He said things I did not know like (warning might be too much info) my pee was too yellow (which it was and I had blamed on vitamin C), that my energy was low and my body out of balance. My kidneys and heart were giving me trouble. YES!
What about Lyme? We asked.
And that is when he said something very wise that will definitely NOT go well with American doctors:
There is bacteria everywhere, people walk around with cancer cells every day, all the time, yet not everyone gets cancer. A balanced body, a strong support system, does not allow bacteria to do anything.
I thought about when I came back from Thailand 3 years ago. I had spent the month at teacher training doing pranayama, asana, taking steam baths, infrared saunas, getting massages, swimming in the ocean, doing the internal cleansings almost every day (vaman, enemas, neti).
I was really healthy when I came back, it showed in the shinning of my eyes. Then of course came the punch of losing the job, home, re-invention of life, my father died. Some really good things came too. But maybe the negative got to be a bit much.
When Dr. H. said that, I longed for health. For a balanced body.
He gave me about 6 different herbs. Some he makes, some he gets somewhere in the orient. all very exotic. Some of them are little round pills I need to take in quantities of eight, three times a day.
The first 3 days...
Were the worst 3 days of my life. I literally thought I was dying.
The transition from antibiotics to just herbs almost killed me, or so I thought, but I survived. My energy went down, I was depressed and suicidal and on top of things I could not sleep or "medicate".
The Scare
One day I got scared. I could not sleep more than 4 hours at all, exactly the opposite of what the antibiotics had done.
I wondered if I could be on "withdrawal" from pharma, so I called him. He never used that word. "Withdrawal". Never. I told him I felt a pain that would move from my heart to my stomach, to my shoulders all day long. He listened. He said I should give it a little more time.
Take some more of the sleeping herbs? No, just two as he had said on day one. Just more time.
Hmmm
But I cannot sleep! Put your feet in hot water for 20 minutes before bed.
Feet in hot water before bed is what my grandmother used to do.

Practice
What practice? No asana no pranayama, not even reading! nothing. The only focus is on healing.
I have, for the first time ever, done nothing but focus on being well. Of course I do miss it and get jealous of all of you and your practices, but in a good way, the good jealousy.
I do take walks and stretch a little. But Primary Series plus intermediate to Laghu, as I knew it 8 weeks ago is gone.
I look at this video in awe, wonder who that is:
The one thing I have been practicing which you "could" call meditation, is being VERY aware of my body. What is happening. Where is it vibrating, how is my heart doing.
The punch line
Right before I was leaving he looked at me deep in thought and said: "Don't do things you do not want to do". It blew my mind. How did he know that for the first 40 years of my life I always tried to please everyone?

I hope Dr. H's treatment will bring you the relief you're ready for and deserve! Not only are you "Earth" sign / birthdate, but also married to the man whose blog is "Ideas for a World OUT OF BALANCE" Restore yourself, my dear - all the right people on your side! Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteHow could he know? Because you are a woman, and that's what most women spend their entire days doing. :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you complete healing in body and spirit.
Hi Claudia,
ReplyDeleteI'm a big believer in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Hope it works for you!
Sending you light and love from Calgary.
ReplyDelete~hugs~
Very interesting and exciting, Claudia. You know, I have actually never been to a Chinese physician in my life, even though I am Chinese :-) I really hope Dr. H's treatment restores you to health. It sounds like he really knows what he's doing. Please keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteHow very interesting. "Don't do anything you do not want to do" in particular. it reminds me of " you can't stay well without telling and living the truth" Nobody told us that being our version of dutiful good girls could derail us from the road to the truth... Thanks for being so generous in sharing your journey to health. We all learn when you write.
ReplyDeleteWe actually never do things that we don't want to do. The problem is wanting to do them for the wrong reasons.
ReplyDeleteHope the new (old old old) approach works for you Claudia.
ReplyDeleteBurnt my finger a couple of days ago, nasty little burn on the knuckle of the first finger, Misa made me put some of her magic ointment on it, heaven knows whats in it. So the wound is open to the air, scabbing over, I was looking at it this morning and I swear I could almost see the new skin forming, thought that would make a nice meditation, take a couple of days and just settle the gaze on it, like watching grass grow or paint dry. My point is, most of the time the body wants to heal itself and we just have to let it do it's thing, give it a little nudge perhaps, encourage it rather than try and force it, rush it. Kind of think of Chinese medicine as working that way. Think the bit where you guy was saying give it more time brought that to mind.
@Karen Thanks. I had not thought about that...
ReplyDelete@Tziporah. I think things are changing, not sure every woman does that every day, I know I try not to anymore. But you could be right, there is so much advertising coming at us all the time telling us there is something not quite right with us. Maybe sometimes I slip back, but no longer as when I was much younger.
I have for example put some very strong boundaries around any person that is negative towards me. That feels good.
@V, thanks, hope so too. Really hope so.
@YogaKitty thank you :-)
@Nobel, interesting, same way I never danced tango till I was a grown up... I do hope it works too!
@Sereneflavor, well put! yes, totally agree.
@Anonymous, I actually feel it is the same thing, wrong reasons still lead to do things we don't want to do. Getting clear would be part of the healing. Guess that is why I like setting goals and writting what it is I want. Then releasing, trusting and being honest wiht myself, as the most important thing.
@Grimmly, yeah, that sounds like a sweet meditation for impermanence, watching the skin re-generate, how beautiful. I suppose that is what I need right now. I get anxious about practice, James keeps telling me "one more week"... Last week you could not even move... I am observing the body a lot... hope your finger heals in right time and well.
My mom is a big fan of TCM so I was subjected to a ton of stinky herbal soups and tonics while growing up. I never believed in any of it, always thought it was pure torture, but when I started living on my own and noticing the changes in my health - lower immunity, for example, or longer menstrual cycles, I started to realize that there's some validity to this approach. It's not instant the way Western medicine works, which is probably best coz it really gives the body time to regenerate and heal. I hope his prescriptions work for you!
ReplyDeleteHow very interesting SA, so glad you told me this! I hope it works too!
ReplyDelete"Don't do things you do not want to do" is absolutely correct.
ReplyDeleteYour physical body is very smart and most likely is trying very hard to get your attention so that you change in some meaningful way. The body can’t communicate very well so when you don't change then the only option is for the body to make things worse until you figure out what is wrong and change. Thus your body is de facto yelling at you at the top of it's lungs regarding something.
The change could be anything: actions, environment, emotions, unresolved stuff, you name it. Everything is linked together in some way between the emotional and the physical so keep working on that and with luck you’ll figure it out. The physical body is very smart and knows what’s best for you but again has no way to communicate, so trust your gut feelings about what is right for you vs. what is wrong for you. Positive change in some aspects of your life may show positive change in your physical side as well.
Based on what you wrote it appears that you've started to bring in change and awareness, so I'd say keep going with that. Writing on a pad of paper in a quiet spot might help bring insight as well. I have other suggestions but do not mean to write a column.
Generally my take is that when you're doing what the universe wants you to be doing then everything flows and come effortlessly. When you're not then nothing works and everything is hard, which ironically is the indicator that you're swimming against the current. The current eases up when one learns the lesson(s) and moves on, though what that is each person has to figure out for themselves.
Hope this helps and that you see positive change in the future.
Hi Claudia, thanks for sharing. I am a HUGE fan of TCM, finally turning to it after natural therapies and allopathic medicine. It took me 1 year of treatment to get back to a balanced state (this was several years ago). To be quite honest, this last year has been pretty average for my health. I have bad asthma/rhinitis and severe dust mite allergy but persisted in attending a shala with old carpet for 1 year , sticking my face in it and breathing deeply. I have had recurrent pneumonia in the last 12 months (spending much time in bed, exhausted, coughing my guts out, and have finally (in August 2011) concluded that my ashtanga practice is not enough to overcome the allergy. So it is back to TCM and home practice (I miss my teacher terribly) for now.
ReplyDeleteGive it time, the TCM will help bring you back into balance. I love how there are parallels with Ayurveda , 5 elements, dietary and enviromental observances, movement of chi/prana.
Take good care.
forgot to mention, a very good technique is called NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique). It is quite the eye-opener, done using acupuncture/acupressure. I've used it and it works wonders for me. They have a practitioner locator on their site and books that can be read to learn more about it. Might help as well.
ReplyDeletewww.naet.com
@John V, I agree with you. I actually left the corporate world and started with my yoga passion. Started that BEFORE I left teh corporate world actually, 6 years before, and continued on... I feel I am doing what I love now. But there is always deeper layers... Never heard of NAET, will check it out energy permiting. Thanks for your comment
ReplyDelete@Min, wow, yes, I can see how ashtanga and carpet would not work, although it does work in the shala in Mysore, but I never breath into the carpet... good thing you made changes that work for you. I hope this works!!! thanks for the good wishes
digging the fact that you're so dialed into yoga. so many folks worshipping consumption, corporations, country clubs, etc. why not yoga?
ReplyDeleteas for your current journey, listening to this song right now by alexander ebert called "a million miles" - great song about walking through dark valleys and making it to the other side.
sending warm and good vibrations your way.
Hi Claudia, I hope the herbal treatments work for you, but I feel like TCMs are not all equal in their healing abilities (just like every profession) and I struggle with their views of western knowledge of the human body and infectious diseases. Hope this doctor is a good one!
ReplyDeleteAnon, thanks. never heard that song, guess I will. Appreciate the good vibes.
ReplyDeleteYyogini, they are definitelly different. The one thing I know is that Westerner medicine has scared me more than it has helped me, unless in emergency situations they seem to tight to the FDA and to follow their protocols. In my case a cardiologist recommended sending radioactivity into my heart, for him it was a "precaution", a "protocol" so his license wont be removed, for me it was radioactivity sent into my heart...
I dont know and I do not have all the answers either, not pretending that... I also hope I heal. I seriously do not care who is right or wrong, just want peace, healing and yoga if possible. On the other hand, well, "thy will be done", I surrender.
yeah, radioactivity to the heart is indeed freaky. my mom's partner in her pediatric practice was a codeine addict - i don't trust doctors that much either. for that matter, i don't trust too many people other than my wife and kids. hopefully, that will change.
ReplyDeletewondering what your thoughts are on john of god in brazil or if you've heard anything about him?
keep on healing. i like the quote, "the invisible is possible."
Hi Anon, yes, there is a lot of trust worthy people is just having the discrimination to find who they are... I guess... I did hear of John of God from Brazil, he comes to Kripalu often, I would like to meet him but have not had a chance yet.
ReplyDeleteLove the quote... :-)
